In the praise of Kama! || (कामबोधनम्-1) ||

Aum namah!

On the horizon the Earth is embracing Akasha. Rivers are mating with ocean. Creepers are embracing trees. Electric currents are getting entwined with clouds. At dawn and dusk day and night are merging in one another. Males and females are attracted and bound to each other. Meditator is eager to merge in the object of meditation. The power or shakti due to which all this is happening is called kama (काम).

Mother is feeding her child keeping close to her breasts. Cow is feeding and licking her calf. Earth is revolving around dancing on its axis. All the planets are joyously dancing in their respective orbits. Giant clouds are roaring like they are playing kettledrums. Lightning streaks, like beautiful maidens are shining and flashing in their dance. Leaves are swinging and singing in puffy blows of air. Flower-laden trees are smiling and giggling. Chirping birds singing in the praise of that eternal power, the Shakti or Mahamaya as we call her. The tone of the force through which this all is happening is called kama.

To obtain which Parvati conducted herself through great penance, that Shiva-Tattva is kama. For which Sita abandoned Ayodhya and followed Rama to the forest, that is Kama. The emotion overpowered by which Indra violated Ahilya, the wife of Gautam rishi is kama.

Motivated by which force the great Muni Parashar impregnated the womb of Matsyagandha, the daughter of a fisherman to give birth to great Muni, Vedavyaasa; that force is kama. The power that motivated rishi Vishwamitra to copulate with heavenly beauty (elf), Menakaa to give birth to a girl child, Shakuntala; the power that made the Mitra and Varuna to ejaculate upon seeing the beauty of Urvashi giving birth to Agastya and Vashishta is kama. The power due to which the non-dual reality (brahman) take the duality in – Akasha-Prithvi, Fire-Soma, Rama-Janaki, Shiva-Parvati, Vishnu-Laxmi, Brahma-Vani, Indra-Shachi, Atri-Anusooya, Purush-Prakriti, Man-Woman, Brahm-Maya is kama. Due to its quality of extensiveness kama is also called Tada (तद् ).

[ तद् = तन् तनोति + क्विप् नस्य दः ]

The element that grows, expands itself, becomes extensive is Tad (तद् ). Thus every particle in universe is filled with Kama. Every body is filled with kama. Kama outside.  Kama inside. Kama ahead, Kama behind. Kama near you and Kama is at far distances. Here and there.. everywhere it is the kingdom of Kama. There is this sentence in upanishad.

तदेजति तन्नैजति तद्दूरे तदन्तिके |
तदन्तरस्य सर्वस्य तदु सर्वस्यास्य बाह्यतः ||
.
Having derived the essence of Tad (तद् ) as Kama the meaning of above is –
.
तदेजति  Kama moves. तन्नैजति Kama is still (does not move). तद्  दूरे  Kama is far, तद्  Kama  is near. तद् अन्तरस्य सर्वस्य तद् उ सर्वस्य अस्य बाह्यतः Everything exists within and outside Kama.
.
Kama is divine and worthy of our worship.

  • We bow down to that kama due to power of which adolescent boys and girls lose their self-control.
  • Salutations to that kama due to which a woman, moving in the cycles of fertility raises the fire of a man and then dowses that off.
  • Salutations to that kama which has power to pull down a person from his place and dignity.
  • We bow down to the power that pushes the man in the endless cycle of luring, serving, using and abusing the woman.
  • We bow down to the power of the kama that drives a man to seeking and keeps a disciple attached to the chosen path of worship, deity & Guru.
Vishwakaamaaya namah!
विश्वकामाय नमः!

– Acharya Agyaatadarshan Anand Nath
It is my honour to place above the literal translation of understanding given
by Veda-Guru paramhamsa Shri ‘Aatharvan’ Ji Maharaj. The permission to
translate his works in English was given by Guruvar in 2016 itself.. but due
to my various engagements it could not begin earlier. This Chaitra Navaratri
I have finally taken up the himalayan task of translating his works in English
as per
his wish so that non-hindi people and even westerners can taste the
divine
nectar of his profound understanding of Vedas. In reverence I humbly
bow down to divinity in him and for his personal guidance.
