Beloved AD, Recently one of my friend did an advance course of Sudarshan Kriya and she reported that participants were instructed to do “Nadishodhana” everyday prior to engaging in “Sudarshan Kriya”! This is our win 🙂 I am happy for your success in forcing them do it. We all know that no one ever wrote so vehemently and openly against such ignorant practices and TV Gurus. We all love you.. please say something on this.

– Shekhar

Beloved Shekhar.. It was bound to happen because Sudarshan Kriya is self-invented breathing technique, having no mention of it in Vedic literature or any other Yoga Treatise. In fact Sri Sri Ravi Shankar claims to having received it during his 10 days silence nearly 30 years back.. but probably he wasn’t prepared enough to receive it in its totality or else Nadishodhana would have preceded Sudarshankriya. Who knows it did come to him but was knowingly ignored keeping in view the demand of something new.. something matching with the expectation of ‘fast-food’ generation.

A Guru Disciple lineage is said to carry its posistives and also its negatives for at least 5 generations. Just like his own Guru Sri Mahesh Yogi, Shri Ravi Shankar also proved to be a man of great ambition and thats the only reason for him to break away from his Guru Shri Maharshi Mahesh Yogi and not teach what his lineage professed. He preferred to create his own empire. And as I see he was definitely an intelligent disciple.. he had seen the success of Maharshi’s “TM”. It is not his fault.. he carries this from his Guru lineage.

His Guru Sri Maharshi Mahesh Yogi, who was gurubhai (Disciples of same master) of renowned Shree Vidya Master Shri Karpaatri ji Maharaj was disappointed by the decision of his Guru to handover the revered seat of Shankaracharya to a Brahmin (Mahesh Yogi was born in a Kayastha Family). Incidentally when he broke away from his Guru Brahmananda the spiritual circles in India allegedly whispered him to be behind the poisoning of his own Guru Shri Bramhananda Saraswati. It is believed that Shri Brahamananda Saraswati knew the secret vidya of converting parad (mercury) in to swarna (gold) and thus his Ashram was virtually like a goldmine. It is alleged that Mahesh Yogi while running away from India took fortunes to distant land in America where he created his own empire. He was Vedic scholar and he did tech Vedic wisdom but gradually he understood Americans would prefer something they can comprehend, at least literally. He gave brand new term “Transcendental Meditation (TM)” to what we call “Dhyan” or “Meditation”.. and caught attention immediately. Universities agreed to conduct research on TM. He also tried to show that TM could even defy gravitation and frog leaps by seasoned TM practitioners were displayed publicly. This was instant hit and many people rushed towards him. Dr. Deepak Chopra is also one of those who worked for Maharshi Mahesh Yogi in those days.. but Brahamananda’s curse shall haunt this poor stream for 5 generations come what may! (laughs)

Dr. Deepak Chopra delivered cermons on healing through sounds (that is what he learnt from his associated with Shri Mahesh Yogi) and some other anscient eastern methods.. His knowledge of medicine, langauge, accent proved extremely beneficial and he succeeded like anything but only to leave his Guru. He preferred to create his own foundation. I am sure these masters would be having their own logic and some sanskrit shloka they would quote to prove that their decision to dump their Guru (while he was still alive) and start their own campaign.. Any initiated spiritual sadhaka would know why… Our knowledgeable people call it “Lokeshnaa” (the desire of fame)..

There are majorly two types of Gurus.. one who come from a lineage and another who are born self-realized. For all lineage bound Gurus shishya parampara a disciple earns the right to preach his own discoveries only after he attains the “Gyaan – the self-realization” before that he should stick to what his Guru has taught him. At best he can be a messenger, an acharya, a teacher.. a medium but never a Guru. There is a huge difference between being a Guru and an Acharya.. And with the grace of Guru and his own relentless efforts in Sadhana and self-purification an Acharya may eventually reach the stage where from he can teach his own learnings as well but before that he should do it in his Guru’s name (if he has one).. This point is missed by so called modern Gurus and they breach the parampara.. the lineage but remember there would be no lineage for them too and many self-proclaimed Gurus would be emerging from these foundations and organizations which would be detrimental to the preservation of authentic knowledge. Yet it is said.. Sun can be clouded for sometime yet ultimately it wins. So, let us keep defogging the minds of people and they would witness the brightness of sun.. the light of knowledge.

When authenticity is compromised for commercial gain or popularity there is always a possibility of error. Whether authentic or not but it must have a price tag for today people value a thing looking at its price tag. More so in America.. Canada.. UK..

That was America my friend Sri Sri… There whatever you, a robe draped sanyasin from India said was believed to be true and authentic for those people were still in their Kindergarten of spiritual education. You could sell them anything, any Kriya, any Yoga in distorted form under any brand name. You could barter it with money for mental peace and spiritual growth for they have enough money and no prior knowledge and experience. This is India.. the land which gave you birth and a Guru to learn from. It gave you that unique identity which is respected acorss the globe.. especially when we are talking “Spiritual”.. Here in India you will have to re-look at every topic of your curriculum to cross check whether it has a reference to our lineage or not. Moreover I would not keep quiet till it is adhered to..

I am really thankful to Yogi Shri Shri Balenduji Giri Maharaj, who was figting this battle alone to have spotted me and given me this responsibility of taking his battle further. In the name of Shiva the Yogeshwara I committed myself and the results are getting visible.

Shekhar, Indeed this is a great win for all of us.. but above all it is win of Indian Vedic tradition and the great Guru Shishya Parampara. It is good they learnt it soon.. realized their mistake and included Nadishodhana as a preparatory step in their practices however there is still cunningness in it because Nadishodhan is to be completed in its entirety before attempting any other pranayama. Sadhkas (Practitioner) should be told this precondition which is not being done by them.. I know if they did so their shop is going to be closed who will buy Sudarshan Kriya then?? (laughs).

Never mind I am here to keep ringing the bell.. (or better bell the cat?) while you all keep the word spreading.. May God be by you!

    Hi AD,
I have been reading your blogs for quite some time and find it very much enlightening. For last couple of days I have been listening to avdhoot baba Shri Shivanand ji who teaches “shivyog” (http://www.shivyog.com/). Can you please discuss in any of your coming blog about different vidyas (Sree Vidya, Shambhavi Vidya, Prati Prasav etc.) they teach?

    Thanks & Regards,
    Sachin

Hello .. I think Nadi Shodhana was part of the DSN program of the Art of Living since 1996, it was taught along with a practice of a set of asanas, and the whole sequence is called the Padma Sadhana. Also before beginning the poojas SSRS and the people always do Nadi Shodhana pranayaams. Even in the basic course some teachers teach the technique, since quite some time back. I am not an art of living supporter but any way I would not like to discredit them for something for which they are not at fault. They might be at fault for not teaching the nadi shodhana from the very start but they are not at all guilty for not teaching the nadi shodhana at all. As per my information Nadi shodhana had always been taught at follow ups, satsangs etc after the basic course right from the very beginning of aol.

I am not a supporter of AoL as I myself have suffered a lot of negative affects from Sudarshan Kriya(9 years almost regular practice), such as loss of calculating power, high blood pressure, loss of hair etc. I have benefited after leaving the practice and focusing on only doing Asanas, and avoiding any sort of heavy breathing at all.

    • Beloved Saurabh,

I empathise with you for suffering the aftermaths of Sudarshan Kriya and appreciate you wrote about your observation honestly however without getting in to nitty-gritty of the dates since when AOL founder Sri Sri Ravisankar thought of including Nadishodhan and also which program it was included i.e. Sudarshan Kriya Basic/Advance Level Workshop or DSN (Divya Samaj Nirman) essentially Nadishodhan is not being given the status of the preparatory practice for Pranayamas and that is what is creating serious health issues for some (Discounting what havoc it must be creating upon your energy channels i.e. Nadis thus affecting your spritual development). ‘Sudarshan Kriya’ is THE “Bhastrika” with some postural modifications and because “Bhastrika” must not to be attempted by any novice as per established Vedic Yoga traditions the same must be transparently informed to ‘participants’ however that never happens.

Even if the word “Nadishodhan” may have been uttered and a small session would have been included but I know it has not been emphasized by any of the modern TV Gurus/Yoga Masters to get proficient in it before attempting any other Pranayama. So despite including it in their curriculum the purpose is defeated.

While some of the “facts” about Mahesh might be just a little less than totally accurate, on point your assessment of Mahesh and his money schemes seems accurate enough as a warning.

Transmutation of mercury into gold is, of course, not within the realm of physics.

However, Mahesh was absolutely NOT a Vedic scholar. By accident, once, I discovered him being coached in the meaning of the Rg Veda by a room full of American amateurs. They were explaining what the Sanskrit words means.

The next day, Mahesh pretended to have had a revelation of the meaning of the Rg Veda.

He was a really good con artist, a scam artist, a confidence trickster. But a guru? I don’t think so.
